MANUSCRIPT CRITIQUES
Writing can be lonely and frustrating. Once we get a draft down, or even get it as polished as we think it can be, we still need feedback in order to truly evaluate what is there on the page. Friends and family are often too gentle with us; editors and agents can be too curt or harsh. I give constructive, comprehensive critiques of fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and drama, having written and studied all of these genres myself. I have three degrees in English, including two graduate degrees in creative writing, and extensive experience in writing workshops, where I’ve learned to read and respond with care and intelligence to the work of my peers and colleagues. I’ve also taught creative writing at the undergraduate and high school level.
In any critique, I believe that the most productive place to begin is with description of the work, including what makes it strong and unique. Then I move to describing weaker areas, at both the global and language levels, offering opinions and guidance for improvement, including reading suggestions. I take all manuscripts seriously, read them at least twice, and treat them with respect. I can give critiques in person, to writers living in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, or written critiques by email or post.
